Plastic forms a significant and highly visible part of business waste. In due course we will introduce an award covering all types of waste, but for now, plastic is a great starting point.
Plastic waste is all around us. And single-use plastic is particularly problematic and most often, unnecessary.
It is estimated that 13 million tonnes of plastic waste enters the oceans every year, harming marine life and seabirds. In the UK we use 38.5 million plastic bottles and seven million disposable coffee cups every day.
There are a number of plastic reduction initiatives that provide certification, and we don’t want to duplicate these.
So a business can gain this a ward by simply uploading proof of that certification.
In Stroud, for instance, the Stroud District Action on Plastic encourages businesses to take part in the Plastic Free Champion initiative. We align our Gold, Silver and Bronze awards with theirs.
“Plastic bags fragment in 100-300 years but will remain at large in the environment indefinitely.”
